The tropical paradise of Cairns in Far North Queensland is home to a diverse, multicultural community of around 160,000 people, and is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. Wuchopperen Health Service is located in Manoora, approximately 5 klm from the central business district of Cairns.

The Cairns Region, with its unique environment, is renowned nationally and internationally as a premier tourism destination and has a tropical climate, with generally hot and humid summers and milder, drier winters.

The Region has the usual range of services with major shopping centres, primary and secondary schooling, sport and recreation facilities and a range of health services.

 

Position Description

Wuchopperen Health Service is currently seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates for the full-time position of SENIOR MEDICAL OFFICER based within our health service located in Cairns.

The successful applicant should have a high level of experience and an interest in Aboriginal health issues and be keen to improve and enhance health for Indigenous people in the Cairns and Atherton regions. The position requires the successful applicant to ensure professional, best practice standards of primary health care at Wuchopperen Health Service and to ensure appropriate health care is delivered in a culturally appropriate manner.

The successful applicant will have a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) or Fellowship of the Australian of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM). Post Graduate qualifications in Public Health will be highly regarded.

Practice Details

* Wuchopperen Health Service *

Established in 1978, Wuchopperen has grown significantly and today provides a comprehensive suite of primary health and social health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Cairns and Atherton.

The clinic is AGPAL accredited.

As an Aboriginal community controlled service, it operates a bulk billing service with the support of clinic staff, i.e., Medical Officers, Clinic Supervisor, Registered Nurses, Health Workers and administrative support staff.

Clients are predominantly Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and the service operates with both a "walk-in" and an appointment system. There is an average of 70 to 80 clients through the clinic on a daily basis..


After Hours

No after hours services are provided from Wuchopperen Health Service at this stage, although funding has been provided for a Thursday evening and Saturday morning service to be established in the future.
