Sustaining safe maternity services in remote and rural Queensland depends heavily on the capability and confidence of GP-Obstetricians. With specialist services often located hours away, rural doctors play a critical role in ensuring women can access care close to home.
Many rural maternity units operate in low-volume settings where high-acuity events occur infrequently but require immediate and skilled management. Maintaining procedural confidence and up-to-date clinical knowledge in this environment can be challenging, particularly where professional isolation and workforce pressures exist.
Ongoing professional development is essential to both service sustainability and workforce retention. Supporting rural GP-Obstetricians to maintain advanced obstetric skills strengthens local service viability and contributes to safer outcomes for mothers and babies.
The RDAQ2026 Pre-Conference Workshop 1: Advanced Procedural Obstetrics Workshop provided by Health Workforce Queensland, held on 25 June in Cairns, has been designed with these workforce realities in mind. The one-day program combines evidence-based updates, case-based discussion and simulation-focused procedural training across antenatal screening, emergency management, and intrapartum and postpartum care.
By investing in advanced skills development, rural GP-Obstetricians are supported to continue delivering high-quality care within their communities.
