In general practice, particularly in remote and rural settings, cardiac presentations rarely arrive with clear answers. What appears routine can shift quickly, requiring a structured and timely response.
A patient presents with vague chest discomfort. Observations are borderline. The ECG isn’t immediately clear. There’s no obvious answer, but there are subtle indicators of potential deterioration.
In these moments, there isn’t time to step back. Information is incomplete and evolving and decisions need to be made as the case unfolds. Do you observe and reassess? Do you escalate? Do you intervene immediately?
This is where clinical practice moves beyond knowledge and into judgement. Recognising patterns, prioritising actions and deciding when to act all happen in real time, often without certainty. For many clinicians, these scenarios are infrequent but high-stakes, leaving little room to hesitate or adjust course when they do arise.
Creating opportunities to step into these situations in simulated scenarios can make a difference. Working through how to apply clinical reasoning in realistic settings, what information to prioritise and how to respond at each stage allows clinicians to build familiarity alongside the theory.
Health Workforce Queensland’s Emergency Cardiology Workshop supports this type of structured practice, giving practitioners the opportunity to work through acute cardiac presentations in a practical environment.
