Health Workforce Stakeholder Group

Health Workforce Queensland (HWQ) convenes the Health Workforce Stakeholder Group (HWSG) annually, and this year’s meeting brought together 34 key stakeholders central to Queensland’s primary health workforce. Held on 12 September 2024, the meeting took place against the backdrop of multiple reviews on scope of practice, workforce maldistribution levers, and primary care reform recommendations from the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce Report.

This was a timely opportunity to explore findings from the 2023 Health Workforce Needs Assessment (HWNA) survey, which identified supportive funding models and incentives as the most critical enabler of team-based primary care. During table discussions, stakeholders agreed that remote and rural Queensland is ready to adopt innovative, flexible, place-based approaches that focus on better coordination and funding of workforce models for team-based care.

Funding arrangements and incentives were reaffirmed as key drivers for the growth of team-based care, with an important caveat: policies must remain flexible to support place-based, integrated approaches and allow funding for local solutions.

We thank all stakeholder group members for their valuable participation and hope the themes developed are useful in advancing your work.
