Regardless of your field of study in healthcare, substance dependency is an everyday reality that impacts us all. Throughout this conversation, we gained insight into addressing addiction through the lens of rural health practitioners. We also heard from speakers who shared their personal experiences, detailing the obstacles encountered in dealing with substance dependency and their transformative paths toward recovery.
In this installment of Go Rural Virtually (GRV), we heard from individuals with disabilities who shared their personal experiences and insights on what it's like to live with a disability. By listening to these speakers, you will gain a deeper understanding and empathy for those with disabilities and be better equipped to provide care that is both effective and respectful.
Mental health affects all of us but in the bush it’s a unique challenge. Each year, approximately one in five rural and remote Australians experience a mental illness. While data suggests the rates are similar in major cities, the accessibility of mental health services significantly differs in rural and remote areas. Farmers, young men, the elderly and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at the highest risk of suicide and self-harm.
Whether aggression and violence are part of your lived experience or not, undoubtedly it will be part of your health career. During this event, we learned from rural health professionals and researchers in the field about the strategies they have developed to deal with unmanageable patients in health settings.
