It has now been four months since I commenced the role of Health Workforce Connector in Gladstone. During that time, I have made some strong connections across a wide range of organisations. These include, Health, Industry, Local Government, Education & Community. I am grateful for the support everyone has shown me as I dove into the unknown and began to broaden our knowledge on how this role can best serve the Gladstone Region.
As we’ve commenced creating health care career pathways within Gladstone, I’ve been encouraged by some early successes.
The second Gladstone Health Workforce Collaborative Newsletter was distributed; this newsletter covers some of the exciting events and updates that are happening within the region across the health care space. If you would like to register to receive this e-newsletter register here.
The first Principles of Effective Clinical Supervision Workshop for 2025, has been organised for May 20, to assist local health professionals gain confidence and skills in supervising students and junior colleagues. Our facilitator, Associate Professor Dr Sneha Kirubakaran, Deputy Head of Learning Community (Rockhampton), University of Queensland Medical School is keen for our up-and-coming practitioners to have positive experiences on their learning journey. Dr Kirubakaran also works as a Rural Generalist in Yeppoon, Central Queensland and has been teaching clinicians how to be better teachers and supervisors for 15+ years, as well as delivering workshops on faculty development in Australia and internationally. Encouragingly, we’ve received registrations from nursing and allied health staff from both primary health care and hospital-based settings. The face-to-face workshop will run for three hours with a light lunch beforehand and is available to all health professionals looking to grow their supervision skills. Professionals are also able to claim three hours of CPD.
I will be presenting to one of the local high school’s Year 10 students later this year and look forward to sharing my passion for the rewarding career paths to be found in health care. Additionally, I will be attending upcoming career & health expo’s and have enjoyed presenting the new role to our community.
Currently I’m working with universities to assist Gladstone students complete clinical placements later this year within CQ and its surrounds and am excited at the opportunity they’ll have to learn within their region and see the positive impact they can have.
Of course, as in any new role, there have been adjustments and so much to learn. But I am excited to see what else we can achieve in 2025. Stay tuned for the next update later this year.
