In 2021, Health Workforce Queensland (HWQ), Western Queensland Primary Health Network (WQPHN), and the Centre for Health System Reform and Integration (CHSRI) partnered with three rural general practices to develop the Queensland Virtual Integrated Practice (VIP) Program. The program pairs an urban-based GP with a rural general practice to offer ongoing care to patients remotely via telehealth, augmented with biannual in-person visits to the practice.
The service aims to support existing rural general practices and provide patients with timely and ongoing GP access, where the local GP workforce is insufficient to meet demand. Darling Downs West Moreton Primary Health Network joined the VIP GP program partners in 2023, and two VIP GPs are now ongoing members of the K-Life practice team in Killarney.
