The 2024 Minimum Data Set Summary Report provides a snapshot of the general practitioner workforce across remote, rural and regional Queensland as of 30 November 2024.

Health Workforce Queensland maintains a comprehensive and updated database of medical practitioners working in a general practice setting throughout MM 2- 7 Queensland. This includes practitioners based in private practices, small hospitals, Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs). The database is informed by multiple sources, including an annual survey of general practices and general practitioners (GPs).

The data collected through the Minimum Data Set (MDS) supports policy development related to the remote, rural, and regional health workforce, and informs service delivery at local, state and national levels. It enables accurate tracking of workforce distributions and supports effective planning to address existing or emerging workforce shortages.

Some interesting points to note from this year’s findings:

  • GPs servicing MM 2-7 QLD originate from more than 75 nations across Oceania (51.2%; including 48.7% from Australia), Asia (30.0%), Europe (9.9%), Africa (7.7%), North and South America (1.2%).

  • The age of GPs servicing MM 2-7 QLD spans from 26 to 88 years, creating a 62-year age range across the remote and rural workforce.

  • From 2023 to 2024, the number of GPs who reported a primary role in private general practice in Remote & Very Remote locations decreased by 5.3%.

  • Over the last 5 years, the number of GPs servicing remote and rural Queensland increased by 8%, whilst the workforce gap rating increased by 16%; suggesting supply is not meeting demand.
