New Insights: 2025 Health Workforce Needs Assessment Released

Conducted annually, this report focuses on the health workforce needs of remote, rural, and regional areas across Queensland. The report offers an updated overview of current and emerging issues,highlights key gaps in primary care workforce and services and identifies priority areas within each Primary Health Network (PHN) region.

Some key findings from this year’s report include:

  • Encouraging, an increase in the number of GPs and nurses working in MM 2-7 Queensland, as recorded in the HWQ database.

  • Occupational therapy returned to the top five workforce gaps for the first time since 2022.

  • Nine of the 20 primary care workforces recorded a decrease in their mean workforce gap rating when compared to the previous year.

  • The most noticeable workforce gap increases were observed for the podiatry, dental practitioner and radiography/sonography workforces.

  • Workforce shortages, attraction/retention, access to services and cost/funding were identified as the main themes to workforce gap comments.

  • The main service gap issues reported by survey respondents included a lack of, and access to services, and long wait times.

  • The rural workforce reported their personal health and wellbeing to be better than it was two years ago.

  • Workforce shortages, privacy and confidentiality concerns, and cost, were reported as barriers by rural practitioners/managers in accessing mental health services for themselves and/or their families.
