On Thursday 21 August, Health Workforce Queensland proudly hosted its inaugural Allied Health Student Careers Expo in Brisbane – and what a day it was!
This vibrant and intimate event brought together 20 passionate exhibitors representing Queensland’s remote, rural and regional communities, all eager to connect with the next generation of allied health professionals. From psychology, speech pathology and occupational therapy to physiotherapy, exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics, there was something for every student exploring where their career might take them.
Exhibitors travelled from all corners of the state to meet with allied health students keen to understand the unique career opportunities available outside of the city and metro areas. They came ready to share everything from current job vacancies and new graduate support programs to insights into the broader scope of practice and incredible lifestyle benefits that come with working in remote and rural settings.
Student feedback spoke volumes. Jake, a nutrition and dietetics student from the Sunshine Coast, said he walked away with a strong understanding of both the career pathways and support structures available for new grads in rural areas.
Sammy, also from the Sunshine Coast, highlighted how valuable it was to hear from recent graduates who are now working in rural communities. “I got to hear a lot of their experiences, and it answered a lot of questions I had in terms of working rural.”
Jinu, a fourth-year physiotherapy student, attended his first-ever jobs expo and found it to be an eye-opening experience. “It was really valuable in helping me figure out what kind of opportunities I could pursue in regional areas.”
Exhibitors were equally enthusiastic, praising the student engagement and the depth of interest in rural health careers. The event was a clear reminder that the future of allied health in rural Queensland is in good hands.
