Health Workforce Queensland is committed to place-based workforce solutions that strengthen rural health services and communities. Our Health Workforce Connector (HWC) initiative is central to this approach, embedding dedicated connectors in regions to build relationships, support pathways, and create sustainable workforce outcomes. To date, we’ve employed four HWCs across South West Queensland, Far North Queensland, and Gladstone, each playing a vital role in linking students, graduates, health services, and communities. These connectors are instrumental in attracting and retaining health professionals by fostering local engagement and ensuring newcomers feel supported and connected.
We’re delighted to welcome Renae Massa as the new Health Workforce Connector for North Queensland. Based in Atherton and Mareeba, Renae will focus on expanding clinical placement opportunities, strengthening ties with universities and practices, and helping health students and graduates experience the rewards of rural practice. Acting as a community concierge, she will assist newcomers in settling into the region, professionally and personally, so they feel part of the community.
By way of background, Renae shares some of her professional experience and what excites her about this role:
"With over 15 years of experience in employment, community service, and workforce development, I’ve worked across some of Australia’s most remote and unique regions. My career has taken me from living in the Torres Strait Islands for more than five years to six years in the Kimberley and its remote communities, as well as time in Darwin and Cairns. During this journey, I’ve supported recruitment, retention, and skills development for community organisations, mentored students, and guided participants to achieve their personal and professional goals.
Recently, I’ve returned to Far North Queensland to be closer to family and our hobby farm, and we’ve just purchased our own block in the beautiful Tablelands. This region offers an incredible lifestyle, and I’m passionate about helping others experience it too.
I’m excited to step into this role and work with our communities to strengthen the health workforce. A big part of my role is supporting GROW Rural NQ students during their rural placements, helping them connect with local practices, experience the rewards of working in regional health, and encouraging them to return as future health professionals. Together, we can create opportunities that make a lasting impact in our region and ensure a healthier future for Far North Queensland."
We look forward to sharing updates on Renae’s work throughout 2026 as we continue building strong, sustainable health workforce solutions.
