General Practice Registrars play a vital role in delivering high quality healthcare to rural, regional and remote communities across Queensland. Whether you are just starting your training, midway through your program, or preparing for Fellowship, Health Workforce Queensland (HWQ) offers a range of support to help you build a sustainable and rewarding rural general practice career. Below you can find our how HWQ can assist you.
HWQ administers the Health Workforce Scholarship Program (HWSP) on behalf of the Australian Government. Eligible health professionals working in rural and remote Queensland may be able to access funding of up to $10,000 per year for up to two years to support professional development activities that align with community and workforce needs.
The program is available to health professionals who are:
Working in Modified Monash Model (MMM) locations 3-7, or
Working in Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) or Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHCs) located in MMM 1-7

The Workforce Incentive Program (WIP) – Rural Advanced Skills stream provides financial incentives to support doctors working in rural and remote communities who use advanced skills to meet local health service needs.
The program aims to improve access to quality primary care services by recognising and supporting doctors who have invested in additional skills, qualifications or credentials relevant to rural practice.
The Rural Advanced Skills stream is available to eligible doctors working in MMM locations 3-7.
In Queensland, HWQ supports doctors by:
Providing information about the Rural Advanced Skills stream and eligibility requirements
Supporting understanding of how advanced skills are recognised within the program
Assisting doctors to navigate the application and assessment process

The Workforce Incentive Program – Doctor Stream provides financial incentives to encourage doctors to work in eligible rural and remote locations and to support continuity of care in communities with workforce need.
The Doctor Stream is available to eligible doctors working in MMM locations 3-7 and includes payments linked to the delivery of eligible services and, in some cases, eligible training activities undertaken in rural locations.
HWQ supports GP registrars and doctors by:
Providing information on how the Doctor Stream applies in Queensland
Assisting doctors to understand eligibility based on location, service type and career stage
Supporting engagement with the relevant payment systems under the program

HWQ supports workforce development for GP registrars and doctors working in rural and remote Queensland through targeted professional development activities.
HWQ delivers and supports practical, face to face professional development workshops that are informed by rural workforce needs and designed to build capability and confidence in rural general practice. These activities focus on strengthening skills relevant to rural settings and supporting high quality, sustainable service delivery in communities with workforce need.
Access to professional development may also be supported through the Health Workforce Scholarship Program where eligibility criteria are met.
