We are thrilled to announce that the Health Workforce Queensland, Queensland Rural Medical Family Network (QRMFN) 2025 Backbone of the Bush Award has been presented to a truly remarkable woman: Candida Blackwell, of Mount Isa, Queensland.
This award recognises the often-unsung heroes behind rural doctors — the partners whose strength, sacrifice, and support are essential to the delivery of healthcare in remote and rural communities. This year’s recipient embodies these values in every facet of her life, and her acceptance speech moved many in the room.
Candida, a suicide prevention nurse at Mount Isa Base Hospital, provides one of the most critical and compassionate services in regional healthcare. Her work is both deeply personal and profoundly impactful — currently focused on implementing a culturally sensitive suicide prevention plan to better support clinicians and communities across rural Australia. Her advocacy for mental health doesn’t stop at the hospital doors. Through her creative business, Tumbleweed Atelier, she designs and sells handmade clothing and accessories, with all proceeds supporting local mental health initiatives.
Candida is also an active member of the local CWA, a vibrant contributor to her community, and — perhaps most touchingly — the steady force behind her husband’s rural GP training journey. She left behind a life and career in Brisbane to help build something extraordinary in Mount Isa. She has done more than adapt — she has flourished, and in doing so, helped others flourish too.
When accepting the award, Candida spoke with humility and emotion, reflecting on the meaning of her work. She said she was honoured to be nominated by her husband and visibly moved by the recognition.
We couldn’t be prouder to honour Candida Blackwell with this year’s Backbone of the Bush Award. Her courage, creativity, and compassion are an inspiration — not just to those in Mount Isa, but to rural communities everywhere.
Congratulations, Candida. Your work makes a difference, and reminds us all of the strength that lives quietly in the heart of the bush.
