One of the standout events from the past few months was APNA’s Festival of Nursing, held in Brisbane at the end of July. Our recruitment team proudly showcased a taste of Queensland at our trade booth, offering local delights such as Kingaroy’s Peanut Van peanuts, Buderim Ginger treats, and non-alcoholic Bundaberg Ginger Beer, all warmly received by attendees. We were also honoured to present key findings on Health and Wellbeing and Perceived Workplace Support Among Rural Queensland Primary Care Nurses. Our presentation delved into the unique challenges faced by nurses in remote and rural settings, highlighting what the data tells us about their experiences and workplace support structures.

Rosie Barton, our Health Workforce Connector in Gladstone, has been actively engaging with communities over the past few months. She attended Dorrie Day, an event that drew hundreds of high school students across various age groups. Rosie shared, “I had some wonderful conversations with students, health professionals, families of health professionals, and community members.”

In August, Rosie also took part in CQ University’s Open Day in Gladstone. She described the event as a valuable opportunity to connect with future students and the wider community, engaging in meaningful discussions about education, career pathways, and opportunities in the health sector.

Meanwhile, Jo Symons, HWQ’s Executive Manager of Strategy & Partnerships, represented us at the National Allied Health Conference in August. Jo described the event as “packed with useful resources and tools for rural recruitment and retention.” She presented ‘What Works for Rural Can Work for Everyone’ and was thrilled to have Chief Allied Health Officer Anita Hobson-Powell in the audience. Jo also praised the inspiring plenary panel on the first day, which featured National Rural Health Commissioner Jenny May, and highlighted its strong alignment with our mission to support end-to-end rural and regional training.
