Health Workforce Queensland is the state’s leading remote and rural health workforce agency. We are experts in recruiting general practitioners to remote and rural communities in Queensland. In the last financial year the Recruitment team have placed a record 113 General Practitioners into communities, an increase of more than 300 per cent since 2012.
We take a personalised approach to recruitment and work collaboratively with general practices and GPs to ensure our candidates are the best possible fit for the communities they serve. This ensures higher retention and greater satisfaction for health professionals.
The average length of stay for our doctors in the last reporting period was 6.3 years, a terrific hallmark for continuity of care in remote, rural and regional Queensland communities.
International Recruitment Strategy
Health Workforce Queensland has delivered the International Recruitment Strategy (IRS) to address health workforce shortages throughout remote, rural and regional Queensland. At the end of September, we were informed that Government funding for IRS will cease immediately as of 1 October, 2016.
Due to the immediate cessation of funding, Health Workforce Queensland will no longer be delivering the IRS. We do not have the resources to continue individually case managing IRS candidates through the recruitment process. We genuinely understand the impact these unforeseen changes will have on candidates, practices and communities.
Currently, IRS candidates are at different stages of the recruitment process. We have advised all incoming candidates of the cessation of IRS funding, and individually explained the direct impacts of the changes and our limited capacity to provide support. For all IRS candidates, we have provided relevant recruitment information for candidates to progress independently. Please see the International Recruitment Strategy Q&A for further information.
International Recruitment Strategy Q&A
Health Workforce Queensland will continue to assist general practitioners trained in Australia and those currently in Australia and registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Health Workforce Queensland will no longer provide services from HWQ Migration Solutions from 30 November 2016.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept new applications or enquiries; receive application documentation; lodge applications; and provide post-lodgement case management.
